THIBODAUX, La. — Nicholls State University announced a new scholarship named after a longtime professor that will benefit dietetics students approaching graduation.
The Dr. Colette Leistner Memorial Endowed Scholarship was created with a donation made by her family and friends as a way to honor her legacy and the impact she made on Nicholls and the community.
A native of Gueydan, Louisiana, Dr. Leistner passed away earlier this year. She served as the director of dietetics at Nicholls for 20 years before she retired in 2013. Dr. Brigett Scott, department head of allied health sciences and interim assistant dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health, was a student of Dr. Leistner’s and worked with her before she retired.
“She was funny and full of stories; she taught by story-telling,” Dr. Scott said. “She was strict but you loved every minute of her class because you knew you were really learning. It was a dynamic experience being her student.”
The $500 scholarship will be awarded to students annually beginning Fall 2019.
Eligible students must be senior dietetics majors who are enrolled full-time and demonstrate a commitment to the Nicholls community while maintaining a 2.75 GPA.
“One of her passions was for other women to succeed,” Dr. Scott said. “Having a scholarship in her name dedicated to a program that is predominantly female is a way that we can continue to carry on her passion.”
