Nicholls Professor to go to Malaysia as part of Fulbright Program

Raj Boopathy (Misty Leigh McElroy/Nicholls State University)

THIBODAUX, La. — Nicholls State University Professor Dr. Raj Boopathy will travel to Malaysia at the beginning of 2019 to help the country with their decades-long pollution problem as part of the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Dr. Boopathy, Alcee Fortier Distinguished Service Professor of biological sciences, will deliver a series of lectures about dealing with and preventing environmental pollution.

“This is an honor and a privilege,” Dr. Boopathy said. “The theme of my talk is going to be about sustainable environmental development. Mostly, I will be discussing pollution control and the minimization of pollution at the source.”

In 2016, he was named a Fulbright Specialist, placing him among the country’s elite scholars. As a specialist, Dr. Boopathy’s services can be requested by international entities seeking his expertise.

Malaysia has been struggling with air pollution for more than two decades thanks to farming practices from neighboring Indonesia. The country’s air pollution index has reached hazardous or emergency levels four times since 1997.

This marks Dr. Boopathy’s third Fulbright award since 2007.

He will leave for Malaysia on Jan. 3 and return Jan. 18, just before Nicholls resumes class for the spring.

The Fulbright Scholar Program was established in 1946 and awards grants to Americans to lecture and conduct research abroad, and to foreign scholars to visit the United States. Grants are awarded to Americans to lecture and/or conduct research abroad, and to foreign scholars to visit the United States. The Fulbright Scholar Program is funded and administered by the U.S. Information Agency through the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, which is affiliated with the American Council on Education. Fulbright Scholars are selected by the Board of Foreign Scholarships, whose members are appointed by the president.
