Fulbright Visiting Scholar to Discuss Wastewater Treatment at Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. — Nicholls State University will host Fulbright Visiting Scholar Dr. Joan Garcia from Spain next week to discuss the use of technology in wastewater treatment.

Dr. Garcia will deliver his lecture “Constructed Wetlands” at 4 p.m. on Monday, March 11 in Gouax 301. The event is free and open to the public.

A professor of environmental engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Catalonia-BarcelonaTech in Spain, Dr. Garcia has focused his research on the development and improvement of environmental biotechnologies that mimic nature and maximize eco-efficiency in the treatment of wastewaters and other kinds of wastes.

He studied biology at the University of Barcelona and his doctoral work has focused on wastewater treatment engineering. He has done postdoctoral work at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Ghent in Belgium.

Dr. Garcia will visit the Nicholls campus as part of the Outreach Lecturing Fund, which allows Fulbright Visiting Scholars in the U.S. to travel to other higher education institutions across the country to share their specific research and exchange ideas.

He was invited to the campus by Dr. Raj Boopathy, Alcee Fortier Distinguished Service Professor. Dr. Boopathy, a Fulbright Specialist, has published research about antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the waters of Bayou Lafourche.

The Fulbright Scholar Program was established in 1946 and awards grants to Americans to lecture and conduct research abroad, and to foreign scholars to visit the United States. Grants are awarded to Americans to lecture and/or conduct research abroad, and to foreign scholars to visit the United States. The Fulbright Scholar Program is funded and administered by the U.S. Information Agency through the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, which is affiliated with the American Council on Education. Fulbright Scholars are selected by the Board of Foreign Scholarships, whose members are appointed by the president.

Nicholls has two Fulbright Specialists on staff in Dr. Boopathy and assistant professor of business law Gene Gouaux. Another professor, Dr. Richmond Eustis, assistant professor of English and Spanish, served as a Fulbright Professor for two years at the University of Jordan.
