Nicholls Awards Emeritus Status to Former Vice President

THIBODAUX, La. — Nicholls State University recognized Laynie Barrilleaux’s broad impact by awarding her emeritus status during Fall Convocation.

Barrilleaux (MBA, ‘80) served as vice president of Academic Affairs from 2011 to 2015, when she retired.

“This is a wonderful university. To feel like I made a contribution after all these years, it warms my heart,” Barrilleaux said. “What more can I say, I’m thrilled.”

During her 32 years, Barrilleaux played various roles across campus.

She served as assistant vice president of Academic Affairs from 2005 to 2010.

Barrilleaux led Nicholls through reaccreditation and recertification with the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

When online education was in its infancy, she oversaw the development and maintenance of Nicholls Online.

She impacted the Nicholls Petroleum Engineering Technology and Safety Management program. When the workforce evolved, she restructured the program to meet their needs.

As an educator, Barrilleaux was a distinguished service professor of management. She also earned the Nicholls’ Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence.

The Nicholls Alumni Federation awarded her the 2014 James Lynn Powell Outstanding Alumni Award.

During convocation, the university also awarded six endowed professorships.

Funded through generous private donations, professorships help Nicholls keep high-quality faculty. They provide supplemental funds for teaching, research or other professional endeavors.
