Nicholls Geomatics Receives 2021 Surveying Education Award

THIBODAUX, La. — The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying recognized the Nicholls State University Geomatics Program with one of its 2021 Surveying Education Awards.

This is the third time Nicholls has received an NCEES Surveying Education Award, which began in 2016. Schools are chosen based on their student outcomes, student involvement, outreach and recruitment. The program will receive $15,000 as part of the award.

“Nicholls Geomatics is uniquely designed to provide a well-rounded education on collection, analysis, interpretation and management of spatial data using conventional methods and emerging technologies,” said Dr. Esra Tekdal Yilmaz, department head of applied sciences. “The unique nature of the program is clearly evident in every aspect of the curriculum design, instructional and research support, advisory board, industry support, the quality of our students and our faculty expertise.”

The award recognizes programs advancing licensure for surveyors to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of the public.

Dr. Tekdal Yilmaz said they plan to use the money to hold a 3-day workshop to introduce high school STEM teachers to the basic concepts and impacts of geomatics.

“These sessions will also create a continuous working relationship between our faculty and local high schools,” Dr. Tekdal Yilmaz said.

Founded in 1920, the NCEES is a nonprofit that develops, administers and scores the surveying licensure tests in the U.S. Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Nicholls’ Geomatics graduates are passing the Fundamentals of Surveying national exam at a 95 percent clip, compared to the national average of 54 percent.

Other universities that received the award include the University of Maine, Ferris State University, New Mexico State University, Florida Atlantic University, North Carolina A&T University and Oregon Institute of Technology.
