THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University invites the community to a plaque presentation ceremony honoring basketball legend Larry Wilson set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, in Stopher Gymnasium from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Following the plaque presentation, the men’s Colonel Basketball team will host an open-practice for the community to attend. Then, at 6 p.m. Colonel Football takes on the University of West Georgia Wolves at John L. Guidry Stadium.
Wilson helped Nicholls energize the Bayou Region with excitement for basketball and helped earn the university conference and NCAA regional championships, drawing in overflow crowds. He was a three-time All-American, two-time Conference Player of the Year and All-Conference Performer all four years of his career, winning the conference scoring title each year.
Wilson is the 18th player in NCAA basketball history below the Division I level to score at least 2,500 career points and also have at least a 25-point career scoring average, ending his career with 2,569 points and a 35.7 career scoring average. He is the all-time leading scorer in the Gulf South Conference and at Nicholls.
Wilson is a member of the Small College Basketball National Hall of Fame, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame, and Nicholls Athletics Hall of Fame. He played in the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star Games in 1979 and was selected by the Atlanta Hawks as pick no. 38 in the 1979 NBA Draft.
The plaque honoring Wilson’s career and time at Nicholls will be installed in the Don Landry Legacy Center in Stopher Gymnasium.
