Nicholls Recreation Center to Host Annual Heroes 5K to Benefit Nicholls Nursing Student

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls Recreation Center invites the community to its annual Heroes 5K on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The event will support a healthcare hero, Morghan Soirez, who currently works part-time as a Licensed Practical Nurse at a local assisted living facility. Soirez is a dedicated Nicholls nursing student, and the proceeds will help pay for her final semester of the program.

Soirez’s passion for healthcare sparked at 13 years old when she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, where the compassion and care she received from nurses inspired her to pursue a career in nursing to serve her community. Through her experience working in healthcare, Soirez has learned that compassion is just as important as clinical competence. She believes patients may not always remember the treatments they receive, but they will remember how they were made to feel through listening, reassurance and genuine care.

As she continues her education, Soirez is excited to grow as a nurse and future healthcare leader. She looks forward to expanding her scope of practice, pursuing leadership opportunities and continuing her education. Her long-term goals include working in pediatric healthcare, potentially at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or becoming a diabetes educator to help others manage and understand their condition.

On race day, meet at the Nicholls Recreation Center at 4:45 p.m. on 147 Bowie Road to complete check-in and begin the race at 6 p.m. The scenic route takes participants through Nicholls’ campus before finishing back at the Recreation Center for food, drinks and games.

Register now at www.nicholls.edu/recreation to support this cause. Adult entry fees are $35, and child entry fees are $10.

Thank you to the Heroes 5K sponsors Liberty Flare, South Louisiana Bank, and Ideal Tax & Bookkeeping for making this run possible.

There are booth opportunities for vendors still available at the post-race party. For more information, contact tanner.leboeuf@nicholls.edu.
