THIBODAUX – With the approach of Tropical Storm Gustav, the Emergency Preparedness Committee of Nicholls State University has initiated a Phase 1 alert in accordance with the 2008 Hurricane Emergency Plan, posted at https://emergency.www.nicholls.edu/.
Phase 1 would generally be enacted when a tropical system has already entered the Gulf of Mexico or has made landfall on the outer edges of the Gulf and is expected to re-enter the Gulf - but the Emergency Preparedness Committee has decided to initiate Phase 1 at this time due to the approach of Labor Day Weekend.
Phase 1 requires the Emergency Preparedness Committee to monitor the speed and path of the storm, to determine on which side of the storm Thibodaux would be positioned, to determine Thibodaux’s distance from the predicted landfall area and to monitor the strength of the storm – at present and at landfall.
All Nicholls departments must refer to their hurricane emergency plan and begin enacting internal Phase I storm preparations at this time.
The Emergency Preparedness Committee will convene again tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. to assess the status of the storm and enact the appropriate measures.
Classes at Nicholls will be held on Friday.
Further updates will be posted at www.nicholls.edu and emergency.www.nicholls.edu.
