Nicholls packs summertime with community classes, camps

THIBODAUX – The Office of Continuing Education at Nicholls State University has announced its 2008 summer schedule for youth and adult non-credit classes. Thousands are expected to participate.

“Each year, community members immerse themselves in a variety of summer programs conducted from the middle of May through the middle of August,” said Brandie Toups, director of the Office of Continuing Education.

“Just over 4,500 community participants visited the campus during summer 2007. We expect that number to exceed 5,000 this summer.”

Many of the participants will be school-aged children, engaged in programs varying from sports camps and academic enrichment programs to performing and visual arts programs, Toups said. Nicholls has already publicized the youth schedule – available at www.nicholls.edu/news.

For adults, Nicholls will offer non-credit programs in physical enrichment, professional enhancement and living skills – and one college-credit program called the Sugar Institute. Slated for June and July, this course will offer international visitors the chance to earn three credit hours – and enjoy Cajun hospitality.

In addition, the Office of Continuing Education will host many off-campus groups that sponsor their own classes and camps. The Manning Passing Academy traditionally draws the most attention, with more than 1,000 young athletes coming from across the United States for four days in July.

The 2008 summer schedule for adults follows. Please note that late registration for most classes is subject to an additional $5 fee.
