Fossier to receive lifetime achievement award

THIBODAUX – The Louisiana Center for Women and Government, headquartered at Nicholls State University, will honor Mildred Fossier of New Orlenas with its Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday, March 28, at a luncheon at the New Orleans Hilton Riverside.

mildredfossierbw1A debutante who graduated from Newcomb College in Uptown New Orleans, Fossier has devoted her life to public service. In the early 1960s, Fossier became the first female to hold the position of director in New Orleans city government, of the Welfare Department first, then of the Parks and Parkways Commission. She hired and promoted African-Americans and Vietnamese-Americans – and women – in her departments, helping to achieve racial integration of city agencies. Fossier has many achievements in conservation and environmental activism, and has received official commendations from five mayors of her native city and the Louisiana Legislature. She is still an active member of the League of Women Voters and the Alliance for Affordable Energy.

The ceremony will also feature the hall of fame inductions of Rosemary Ewing of Quitman; Phyllis Mayo of Baton Rouge; Anne Milling of New Orleans; and LilyB Moskal of Lafayette. The Blue Ribbon Award will go to Cherry Fisher May, publisher, Independent Publishing Group.

National political consultants and New Orleans residents Mary Matalin and James Carville are scheduled as keynote speakers.

Tickets to the awards ceremony are $50 each and include a coffee and cash bar at 10:30 a.m., followed by the noon luncheon and awards ceremony. For reservations, contact the center at (985) 448-4770.
