Jubilee offers Bayou Region several weeks of music

THIBODAUX – The 11th annual Jubilee: A Festival of the Arts and Humanities at Nicholls State University, will present a variety of musical events until festival’s end, Saturday, April 25.

Musaica Chamber Ensemble

Date and Time: Sunday, March 29, 3 p.m.

Location: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 718 Jackson St., Thibodaux

Admission: $10 adults, $5 students

Musaica was founded in 2006 in New Orleans by a group of professional musicians, most of whom play with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra or teach at Loyola University. The ensemble received the “Best Chamber Music Concert” award for 2007 from Gambit magazine, and its program of American chamber music was nominated as “Best Chamber Music Concert” for 2008.

New Orleans Civic Orchestra

Date and Time: Sunday, March 29, 7:30 p.m.

Location: Talbot Theater

Jim Hamann will conduct the New Orleans Civic Orchestra in a performance at Nicholls.

Nicholls String Studio

Date and Time: Tuesday, March 31, Noon

Location: Envie Restaurant, 203 N. Canal Blvd., Thibodaux

Admission: Free, or $11.25 with lunch

The Rotary Club will host a performance by the Nicholls String Studio, instructed by James Alexander of the Nicholls Division of Music.

Chamber Music Recital

Date and Time: Tuesday, March 31, 7:30 p.m.

Location: Talbot Theater

Nicholls woodwind and brass faculty will present a chamber music recital with performers Cristina Mendoza, trombone; Fran Hebert, piano; and Donna Sammarco, piano.

Jeffrey Siegel, Pianist

Date and Time: Sunday, April 5, 4 p.m.

Location: Talbot Theater

Jeffrey Siegel, a piano soloist with some of the world’s great orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony, will present a “keyboard conversation,” a unique concert plus commentary in which Siegel speaks to the audience about the music before and after performing.

Master Class: Jeffrey Siegel, Pianist

Date and Time: Monday, April 6, 10:45 a.m.

Location: Talbot Theater

Siegel will offer insights about his solo career in music to inform students about potential opportunities.

Nicholls Blue Bayou Big Band

Date and Time: Tuesday, April 7, 7:30 p.m.

Location: Talbot Theater

The band will perform under the direction of Cristina Mendoza, Nicholls instructor of music.

Brass and Woodwind Chamber Ensemble

Date and Time: Tuesday, April 21, 7:30 p.m.

Location: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 718 Jackson St., Thibodaux

This performance is presented by the Nicholls School of Fine Arts, Division of Music.

Bayou Community Band

Date and Time: Thursday, April 23, 7:30 p.m.

Location: Talbot Theater

Sponsored by the Houma Regional Arts Council, the Bayou Community Band will present “End of an Era” with John Stafford, director, and Sandra King, choir director.

String Studio Recital

Date and Time: Friday, April 24, 7:30 p.m.

Location: Talbot Theater

This performance is presented by the Nicholls School of Fine Arts, Division of Music.

Guest and Faculty Chamber Recital

Date and Time: Saturday, April 25, 7:30 p.m.

Location: Talbot Theater

This event will feature Felipe Aquino, cello; Sandra Aquino, violin; Luciana Soares, piano; and James Alexander, violin.

Jubilee takes place every spring to raise the level of awareness in the arts and humanities for the Nicholls community and the southeast region of Louisiana. The festival includes dozens of events in the categories of art, cuisine, history, literature, music, performing arts and Cajun culture. Artists and presenters come to Thibodaux from across the South, the nation and other parts of the world, including Kenya and South Korea.

The festival began in 1999 as part of the university’s 50th anniversary celebration and has become an annual tradition that draws thousands of locals, tourists and academics.
