Nicholls Players set to hold auditions for ‘The Diviners’

THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University’s acting troupe, the Nicholls Players, will hold auditions for its spring semester play, “The Diviners,” on Monday, Jan. 25, and Tuesday, Jan. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Talbot Theater. The script calls for six men and five women.

All area students, both those interested in being onstage and working behind the scenes, are invited to attend the auditions.

Set in rural Indiana during the 1930s, “The Diviners” centers on Buddy Layman, a young man who suffered a brain injury as a child after a near-drowning. Following the crisis, Buddy developed both a fear of water and a mysterious power to divine water. His community sympathizes with him but cannot heal him from his fear until C.C. Showers, a wandering, disillusioned preacher, befriends the boy and provides much needed freedom from his fear.

Popularly produced on college campuses, the play was the 1979 winner of the American College Theatre Festival Playwright’s Award.

Rehearsals will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, and will continue each week, Sunday through Thursday, until production. Performances are scheduled for March 18-21 in Talbot Theater. Actors are expected to attend all rehearsals.
