Nicholls spring commencement scheduled for May 14

THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University will hold commencement exercises Saturday, May 14, in Stopher Gymnasium, where approximately 600 degrees will be conferred.

Ceremonies for the College of Business Administration and College of Education will begin at 10 a.m. The College of Arts and Sciences, College of Nursing and Allied Health and University College will hold their ceremonies at 2 p.m.

The keynote speaker is Jay Dardenne, who was elected lieutenant governor of Louisiana in November 2010 with 57 percent of the vote, filling the remaining year on an unexpired term. Dardenne previously served four years as secretary of state and fifteen years in the Louisiana State Senate. During his legislative service, he chaired the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate and Governmental Affairs Committee. In 2003, he was named National Republican Legislator of the Year. He is also an active community volunteer, having hosted the Jerry Lewis Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for more than 25 years. Dardenne is a graduate of Baton Rouge High School, LSU and the LSU Law Center.

Following Dardenne’s address, Dr. Eugene Dial, vice president for student affairs and enrollment services, will present the honors, and Dr. Allayne “Laynie” Barrilleaux, vice president for academic affairs, will present the candidates for the degrees. Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, university president, will confer the degrees.

An honorary doctorate will be presented to Tresha Mabile Bergen, a 1989 Nicholls mass communication graduate who is currently a producer, director and documentary filmmaker. Her past five films have focused on Iraq and Afghanistan, including the June 2010 National Geographic Channel documentary “Talibanistan.” Mabile Bergen, whose name heads a 43-name credit roster in the film, is married to Peter Bergen, the CNN Middle East analyst who in 1997 interviewed Osama bin Laden. She is a native of Pierre Part and a 1985 graduate of Assumption High School.
