THIBODAUX – The Sinfonia Singers, Nicholls State University’s male chorus, will perform a free concert of seafaring tunes at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, in Talbot Theater on the Nicholls campus.
Featured works will include several sailor and dockhand work songs, also known as sea shanties, or chanties. Such tunes thrived in the 18th and 19th centuries but met their demise as sailing ships were replaced with steam power.
Sea shanties to be performed include “Drunken Sailor,” “Blow the Man Down” and “A-Roving,” among others. Also on the program are David Folz’s “Break, Break” and “There is Nothing Like a Dame,” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific.”
Senior music education major Kevin Falgout will conduct “Drunken Sailor” and play a tenor saxophone obbligato of “Black is the Color of my True Love’s Hair.”
Sponsored by the Omicron Beta Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia at Nicholls, the chorus is directed by Dr. Kenneth S. Klaus, professor of music and director of choral activities. Dr. Norman Dale Norris, assistant professor of education, will accompany the singers on the piano.
