Nicholls strings to perform this month

THIBODAUX – Musicians with the Nicholls State University Department of Music’s strings program will perform two free concerts this month, both open to the public.

First on the schedule is the String Studio Recital, slated for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in Talbot Theater on campus. The concert will feature students of the Nicholls strings program playing works for violin, viola and cello, as well as chamber music. Composers to be featured include Beethoven, Brahms, Handel Prokofiev, Smetana, Schumann, Lalo and Rolla.

On the following Monday, Nov. 14, the Nicholls Camerata will perform at St. Joseph’s Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. Slated for 7:30 p.m., the concert will feature string ensemble selections from Mendelssohn’s Octet, the “Four Antique Dances” of Respighi and “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzola. The Camerata is a small chamber orchestra of students playing violin, viola, cello, bass and harpsichord. Violinist James Alexander, faculty head of the string program, directs and performs with the ensemble.
