Nicholls to host spring fairs and summer camps for youth

THIBODAUX – The Office of Continuing Education at Nicholls State University will offer various programs for youth 18 and under during the upcoming months.

“March is especially full of exciting events,” Simone Harris, director of continuing education, said. “Once a year, our office takes part in hosting a series of educational fairs and rallies for elementary, middle and secondary schools in the tri-parish area.”

The spring 2012 schedule includes the Louisiana Region I Science Olympiad; 46th annual Region 10 Social Studies Fair; 53rd annual Louisiana Region 10 Science and Engineering Fair; and two South Central Louisiana District Rallies, one for literature and art and the other for music and drama. Details are available at www.nicholls.edu/continuing-ed/youthprograms/2012-spring-fairs/.

“Fairs such as these allow Nicholls to connect with high-caliber students,” Harris said. “They are great recruiting tools for our university.”

Summer camps perform the same function, Harris said. Already open for registration, programs this year include athletics, recreation, self-development, fine arts, performance, academics and additional camps and classes organized in a comprehensive, youth-oriented format. Presenters from local, university and national levels are scheduled to direct and teach the programs.

“These camps provide area youth with productive, healthy fun during their summer break,” Harris said. “The goal is to develop their self-confidence, independence, leadership skills, mutual understanding and socialization skills, all in a fun and relaxed environment.”
