THIBODAUX – Approximately 2,000 youths from area primary, middle and secondary schools will be attending the “Tresors du Bayou” Education Program, scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, March 16, near John L. Guidry Stadium at Nicholls State University.
Intended as a prelude to the three-day, fourth annual Louisiana Swamp Stomp Festival, the Tresors du Bayou cultural program will feature local artists, historians and craftspeople performing for the public at no cost. The swamp pop band Treater will perform Zydeco and Cajun music, and dance instructors will teach guests the Cajun Waltz, Cajun Two-Step and Cajun Jitterbug. Tresors du Bayou will end with a free concert featuring Cameron Dupuy and the Cajun Troubadours.
“It is very gratifying that this event has become so popular with the youths of our region,” Brenda Haskins, Nicholls director of auxiliary services and Swamp Stomp festival committee co-chair, said. “The purpose of Tresors du Bayou is to pique interest in south Louisiana culture so that the attendees will be encouraged to keep it alive and well. I also encourage them to bring their families back to the Swamp Stomp festival itself, which kicks off the same day.”
Tresors du Bayou is funded by a grant from the Houma Regional Arts Council and Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program. Participating schools represent Lafourche, Terrebonne and St. Mary parishes.
