Nicholls President Bruce Murphy Comments on WISE Signing

THIBODAUX — Dr. Bruce Murphy, president of Nicholls State University, attended Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal’s signing ceremony for the Workforce Innovation for a Stronger Economy (WISE) Fund bill Thursday, June 19, in Baton Rouge.

The $40 million fund will be available to universities to support programs and research that educate workers in high-growth fields, such as business, health care, petroleum services and engineering. Universities must have industry support to compete for funding. Nicholls faculty and administrators are discussing ways to leverage the fund to support the university’s high-demand workforce education programs.

Murphy issued the following statement about the WISE Fund:

“I have been speaking about and advocating for the WISE plan since its public announcement in January, shortly after I assumed duties as president of Nicholls State University. At every group to whom I spoke — faculty and staff at Nicholls, as well as at community, business and industry, governmental and service club gatherings — all had positive and supportive reactions. The WISE plan is a signal that the State of Louisiana is concerned about higher education and will seek to find creative ways for public universities to achieve their workforce development mission through cooperative partnerships with all sectors of society.”
