THIBODAUX – Shell Oil will invest $50,000 in Nicholls State University’s ongoing coastal research projects, including the production of native plants for coastal restoration.
“Shell’s Deepwater Operations is a proud supporter of Nicholls’ efforts,” John Hollowell, Deepwater Executive Vice President for Shell, said. “Our employees have volunteered at the Nicholls Farm for the past three years.”
Joint volunteer events headed by Shell and the university have produced and planted thousands of native plants in coastal Louisiana as part of the Louisiana Native Plant Initiative – a multi-institution effort spearheaded by faculty members of the Nicholls Department of Biological Sciences. Students, instructors, staff and community volunteers regularly produce and distribute native plant materials for coastal renewal.
“We will use Shell’s investment to support community outreach, student education, research and production of native plants at the Nicholls Farm for use in marsh, beach and dune restoration projects,” said Dr. Allyse Ferrara, associate professor of biological sciences. “Nicholls values this corporate/academic partnership and recognizes its importance for coastal Louisiana habitats.”
