The Department of Allied Health Sciences is an interdisciplinary group of educational programs offering opportunities from entry-level undergraduate education to advanced educational and clinical practice options for health care professionals. The department uses innovative on-campus and online components to achieve its mission of preparing professionals for today’s health care market.

Allied health refers to occupations that support, aid and increase the efficiency of physicians, dentists or primary clinical specialists.

The mission of the Department of Allied Health Sciences is to prepare students to contribute to a global society and a diverse workforce as productive, responsible, and engaged citizens, and as well-educated allied health professionals to meet the healthcare needs of the Bayou Region and beyond.

A bachelor’s degree in dietetics from an accredited program is the first step in becoming a registered dietitian.

Dietetic Internship Graduate Certificate Program

The DI program is a post-baccalaureate certificate program of study. The DI provides a verification statement to the student upon successful completion of the program which qualifies him/her to sit for the National Registration Examination for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) administered by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Commission on Dietetic Registration. 

Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics Leadership

This program is for students who want to complete their master’s degree to be eligible to take the CDR Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) exam. By enrolling in our 100% online Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics Leadership, students will have the opportunity to earn their master’s degree in as little as 2 years. 

MINORS

Enhance your resume. A minor can be a bonus when looking for a particular job or give you that edge when applying for graduate school.

National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association

The National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association is a pre-professional membership association for students interested in the study of communication sciences and disorders. National membership is available to undergraduate, graduate or doctoral students enrolled full- or part-time in communication sciences programs or related majors.

  • Encourages professional interest in the fields of speech-language pathology
  • Allows students a venue for members to assume leadership roles
  • Helps in national, community and university projects through service and monetary contributions
  • Helps to provide for the needs of the Jo Carol Nolen Speech, Language and Hearing Center

Any Nicholls student interested in the study of communication sciences and disorders can join.

NSSLHA Nicholls Chapter holds a social gathering at the beginning and end of each semester. New members can meet faculty and upperclassmen. Guest speakers are often invited to provide members with a hands-on look at the field of speech pathology and audiology or related fields. The speaker may be, for example, a local physician, private practitioner or other community professional. The group also participates in university and area service projects.

Yes, the group usually meets at noon on the last Tuesday of the month in Ayo 118.   Reminders are posted through emails.  Drop in!

 The dues are $15 per semester and are primarily used to fund contributions to worthy causes, such as “Operation Smile,” funding for guide dogs for the hearing impaired, funding items for residents of nursing homes in the area and items for the Jo Carol Nolen Speech, Language and Hearing Center.

Allied Health Club

Our goal is to provide students with support, answer any questions, enlighten on further education, promote Allied Health professions, and foster interaction with professionals of Allied Health.

The benefits of membership include collaborating with other Allied Health students, providing service to the community while learning more about your chosen field, and developing contacts and resources that can assist in the success of your college program.

Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society

Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society, the Kappa Delta Pi Chapter at Nicholls State University, is part of a national organization that is the leading honor society in the field of Human Sciences. This organization promotes empowered leaders who use an integrative approach to enhance the quality of living through excellence in scholarship, leadership, and research.

Eligible students include those majoring in Health Sciences, Dietetics, and Family Studies (Psychology) who have completed 45 semester hours with a 3.5 GPA or higher and rank in the top 30% of their academic cohort.

Executive committee for 2021-2022 is Katie Charrier, Lauren Gervais, and Allie Massey.
