The mission of the Sociology program is to offer courses leading to a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree that conveys knowledge of the human condition and of the social forces that influence the development of society via quantitative and qualitative research techniques and sociological theory. The program seeks to prepare students for careers in government, private industry, social services, as well as graduate work in sociology and social work. The program also satisfies the general education social science key requirements by providing the student with the essential knowledge to respond to a changing world with emphasis on the sociological imagination and critical thinking in an immersive dynamic environment (classroom and field work).
The sociology program is designed to provide a sound education in sociological content, theory and methodology in order to prepare students for employment or for further study. Sociology is the study of the organization, dynamics and consequences of social life. Sociologists study social interaction and relationships, organizations and institutions, communities and whole societies. Our work yields powerful insights into the social processes shaping lives, problems and possibilities in contemporary society.
