Bachelor of Science in Management – Human Resources Concentration

From hiring to firing, students concentrating in human resources management learn what it takes to nurture what many companies consider their most valuable asset: employees. Courses focus on staffing, training and development practices as well as techniques for evaluating job performance and compensating workers. The National Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has acknowledged that Nicholls State University’s Bachelor of Science in Management with a Concentration in Human Resources is in alignment with SHRM’s HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates. Throughout the world, 352 programs in 264 educational institutions have been acknowledged by SHRM as being in alignment with its suggested guidelines and templates.  Expanding governmental regulations relevant to the workplace and changes in the composition and needs of the work force have made the management of human resources an important function.

ABOUT SHRM

SHRM@NSU is the student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management at Nicholls State University.  SHRM@NSU is closely associated with Bayou SHRM, and it promotes mutually beneficial interaction between students and HR practitioners. Membership offers students the opportunity to supplement their classroom education with real-world knowledge and hands-on experience. We have regular meetings, usually bi-weekly, with scheduled programs designed to help members learn more about HR and the real world of business, and to network with one another and with HR professionals. These activities allow members to learn more about human resource management while building relationships with local professionals and other students and, of course, having fun!  SHRM@NSU usually meets every other week. The meeting day and time change each semester to best fit members’ schedules. Generally, food is served in our meetings.

What We Do

SHRM@NSU participates in activities such as hosting HR guest speakers, attending local and state HR conferences, attending Bayou SHRM meetings, attending state regional case competitions, raising funds for charities such as the Thibodaux Christmas Toy Drive, and other activities based on members’ interests, such as the following:

High School Business Workshop Series: SHRM@NSU aids in the presentation of information to high school juniors and seniors interested in a Business career. We talk about how to not only update your resume and application, but also how to give the best first impression possible. They learn how to give proper handshakes and how to stand tall and proud!

NSU Student Orientation:  SHRM@NSU plays a very active role during New Student Orientation. We set up a table adjacent to the College of Business booth. We talk to new students about our organization and what we do. Our officers were very creative this year and implemented a wonderful idea – a photo booth!! The new students that visited our table had the opportunity to have of their photos taken, with our officers or their friends, all dressed up in their choice of funny masks, hats, etc, supplied by us. The photo booth was an instant hit, and we saw a large number of visitors.
