FILM STUDIES (ENFS)

With a booming film industry in Louisiana, also known as Hollywood South, and a growing interest in film in the bayou region, there has never been a better time to take Film Studies at Nicholls. This program introduces students to film criticism, production, screenwriting, and the business of film. What distinguishes our program is that students can choose their focus of film studies, tailoring their degree with more creative filmmaking courses, more film history, appreciation, and theory, or a bit of both.

As we are surrounded by mass media, Film Studies provides students with the skills to understand and analyze moving images, sound, and story. Our courses take the fundamental elements of film—color, lighting, angles, framing, music, editing, and more—and unpack how these develop meaning. In production and screenwriting courses, students will work both individually and collaboratively, learning the foundations of story and film techniques, on projects such as narrative shorts, documentaries, and experimental films. Each spring, students producing film projects exhibit their work at the Scholars Expeaux screening in Le Bijou Theater.

If you are passionate about film and television and you engage with narrative, characters, and themes on a deeper level, Film Studies may be the right place for you. If you love making video posts on social media or YouTube and write scripts for fun, thismight be your degree. If you’re excited about how contemporary film movements fit into the conversation of the history and culture, Film Studies may be where you belong.

From Citizen Kane to Everything Everywhere All at Once to Barbie, from the earliest silent films to modern day sci-fi/action films, students in Nicholls Film Studies enjoy discovering films and learning how human life and culture is reflected on screen.
