Police Reporter

The Times-Picayune | NOLA.com | New Orleans

The Times-Picayune | NOLA.com, a Pulitzer Prize-winning, locally owned news organization, is seeking a dynamic police reporter to cover one of the nation’s most high-profile crime beats.

About the Role

Crime and policing coverage in New Orleans, one of America’s most culturally rich and complex cities, is a critical part of our newsroom’s mission. We are looking for a journalist with strong investigative instincts, sharp storytelling skills, and a relentless drive to break news while producing deep, enterprise reporting on crime trends, policing policies, and their broader impact on the community.

What You’ll Do

  • Cover breaking crime news with urgency, accuracy, and depth.
  • Develop strong law enforcement and community sources to break exclusive stories.
  • Investigate and analyze trends in crime and policing, using public records, social media, and data tools.
  • Report on New Orleans Police Department leadership, policies, and internal affairs.
  • Explore how policing intersects with race, class, and political power in the city.
  • Contribute to multimedia storytelling across digital and print platforms.

What We’re Looking For

  • A passion for covering crime, policing, or investigative journalism.
  • Strong ability to balance breaking news with in-depth enterprise reporting.
  • Proficiency in public records requests, online investigative tools, and social media research.
  • A relentless, street-level reporter eager to dig beyond press releases and official statements.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on a team.
  • Willingness to work a slightly later weekday shift and on Saturdays.
