Marketing and Communications Coordinator

The Water Institute | Baton Rouge

We are looking for an experienced Marketing and Communications Coordinator to support The Water Institute’s efforts to increase visibility and recognition as a trusted, collaborative independent scientific research organization. Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, this position helps implement strategic communications across a variety of platforms and audiences.

The Coordinator is a skilled communicator and creative multimedia content producer crafting visual and written materials, coordinating campaigns, and ensuring consistent, mission-aligned messaging.  

This position will work closely with research and mission advancement teams to help translate the Institute’s scientific and technical work into accessible and engaging communications products.

Roles and Responsibilities

Content Creation & Storytelling

  • Draft, edit, and design content for a variety of platforms, including social media, website, videos, presentations, press releases, and fact sheets. Strong emphasis on video and design.
  • Translate complex scientific topics into clear and compelling visual and written stories.
  • Support the development of communication materials for mission advancement and stakeholder engagement.

Visual Communication & Brand Management

  • Create basic visual assets including graphics, presentations, and short videos using design tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, or CapCut Pro.
  • Help maintain the Institute’s visual identity and editorial standards across communications products.
  • Coordinate with vendors and internal teams to support the production of high-quality visual materials.
  • Organize and maintain shared libraries of templates, brand assets, and documentation.

Campaign & Project Support

  • Support the execution of marketing and communications campaigns aligned with organizational and project goals.
  • Collaborate with research and project teams to assist in developing communication materials that clearly convey key messages and findings.
  • Help track and organize communications metrics to inform content development and performance improvements.

Support other departmental functions as needed:

  • Assist with event planning, public engagement activities, giving tours and presentations, and tabling, etc.
  • Contribute content to the Institute’s website and social media platforms ensuring updated with accurate, relevant, and engaging content.
  • Other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2-5 years of experience in communications or public relations, preferably in a mission-driven or research-focused organization.
  • Strong writing and editorial skills with the ability to tailor content for a variety of audiences.
  • Experience translating complex or technical topics into engaging and visually compelling content.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop visual assets using Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, CapCut Pro or other video editing tools.
  • Proficiency with digital communications platforms including website content management systems, Constant Contact (or similar), and major social media tools.
  • Strong collaboration and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.

 

Successful candidates will desire to continue expanding their knowledge and skills, be results-driven and self-motivated, and are capable of effective cross-disciplinary collaboration in a demanding, fast-paced environment. Responsibilities will reflect career stage and previous experience. Workload will vary from week to week, and candidates will be flexible, willing to occasionally work evenings, and travel for meetings and conferences.

We are headquartered in Baton Rouge and the position will ideally be located in Louisiana at our main office in Baton Rouge.

The hiring pay for the position starts at $53,000 and a final determination is based on the skills, education, and/or experience of the successful candidate. We believe in the importance of pay equity and consider the internal equity of our current staff as part of any final offer. We also offer a generous benefits package for full-time exempt positions.
