The English Program offered through Nicholls Online offers the following major areas of concentration: creative writing, literary studies, film studies, and writing and rhetoric. The degree is organized around a core of courses that will begin with English 220 designed to introduce you to the discipline, each area of concentration, and what kinds of jobs you can expect to find after graduating with a degree in English. You will find a wide variety of electives to choose from before entering your area of concentration, such as American, British, and World literature and the literary genres of fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and even film. In keeping with national trends in the study of literary works, you will encounter a number of timely and attractive themes addressing global issues. You will complete your degree by registering for the capstone, English 405 where you will reflect on what you have learned as an English major, further discuss your career options, and complete materials necessary to enter the next phase of your career, whether you are seeking to join the workforce or are planning on seeking an advanced degree.
The number one quality that employers are seeking is excellent communication skills, and a degree in English assures that you will possess such skills in speaking and writing. English is a generic degree that can prepare you for law school, medical school, graduate school in all disciplines and for jobs in administration, editing, publishing, public relations; and as a personnel director, business manager, computer systems analyst, librarian. The degree can prepare you for journalistic fields, such as writing for newspapers/magazines, TV, or working in broadcasting. It can prepare you for writing fields, such as being a novelist, poet, script writer for TV and films, dramatist, professional and technical writer. Of course, you can also teach with a degree in English.
The list below describes just some of the jobs each concentration can prepare you for, but a degree in English offers much more than what is listed here for each concentration:
Creative Writing: novelist, poet, non-fiction writer, publishing, professional editing, writing for TV and film, any field in writing, and teaching
Literary Studies: a very generic degree for teaching, writing, publishing, business, administration, teaching
Writing and Rhetoric: non-fiction writer, broadcaster, publisher, professional editor, professional/technical writer, writing for the gaming industry, business, teaching
Film Studies: writing for TV and film, broadcaster, content or editor, art director, sound or visual editor, or film journalist
CYA Literature: writing for children and young adults, publishing, teaching, working in a library
