Mandatory Internship Meeting

Monday, Oct. 6 @ 1 pm in Talbot 107
or
Tuesday, Oct. 7 @ 2 pm in Talbot 106

The INTERNSHIP PROGRAM is designed to give students practical mass communication experience to accompany their classroom education.

In most cases, internships are taken during the summer between the student’s junior and senior years. The internship need not be an entire summer, although that is usually the best arrangement. Students receive credit in Mass Communication 390 for off-campus work and 388 for on-campus work.

Internships Step-by-Step

Steps 1-5 must be completed at least 3 weeks before the start of the semester you want to do the internship.

Before the Internship

Confirm completion of at least 18 hours of MACO course work, which, in the estimation of the adviser, adequately prepares the student for the position.

  1. Watch the internship training video and review the internship handbook.
  2. Take and pass the internship training exam [just stop by the MACO office during regular office hours]

It is the student’s responsibility to find and secure an internship location. Students may choose a location in one of three ways:

  1. find a location based on interest areas, skills and location
  2. from one of the local sites that hosted interns in the past and have expressed interest in having future interns [see below under Internship Opportunities heading]
  3. from one of the current postings from area businesses and organizations who have a specific opening [see below under Internship Postings heading]

Once an internship location is chosen, students must apply online at least 3 weeks before to the start of the semester in which the internship will be taken.

Applications must include:

  1. Supervisor Letter
    • Supervisor writes letter (on company letterhead with a signature) to coordinating professor confirming the student has been accepted as an intern, specifying the details and the number of hours to be worked in the position (at least 10 a week).
    • The letter serves as the location site’s acceptance of responsibility for the student and student work on-premises.
    • For-profit internships for no pay MUST outline in the internship supervisor acceptance letter the duties of the intern that directly relate to the student’s degree concentration.
  2. Internship Agreement Form
  3. Prospectus
    • Student writes brief essay to including the background of company and why you chose it as your internship site; what you can bring to this location; and what qualifies the supervisor person as a supervisor.
  4. Resume
  5. Password: ma20co25!

  1. Department committee will review the application based on academic eligibility, and the student’s application.
  2. Based on committee approval, the department will register the student for the course.*

*Students must be registered for MACO 388 or MACO 390 and pay fees to receive credit for a practicum/internship

During the Internship

  1. Make sure to arrange your work schedule with your location/supervisor
  1. With enrollment in the MACO388 or MACO390 course, you will be enrolled in the corresponding Canvas course with clear deadlines and expectations.

Internship Locations

The internship locations in the grid below periodically take our interns and are simply listed as suggestions of possible sites. The internship postings are locations who have contacted us about current openings.

The best option is always a location that is in the area you wish to work in after graduation. Ultimately, finding and securing a location is up to you and your career interests!
